What
Questions Should I
Be Asking?
by Rose Smith
Some entrepreneurs
just seem to know exactly what they want
to do and they go ahead and do it. Starting their
business
appeared to come easy to them. For others though, there
is
a world of choices and possibilities. Which one do you
choose?
When choosing a business to start, the majority of
people
will ask themselves 2 questions: What do I want to do?
What should I choose to do?
The problem with asking "what business do I want to
do" is
that a lot of people just don't know. They begin to look
at
the skills they have, their interests and hobbies, the
jobs
they've held in the past, what's hot right now in
business
and what other people are making money from.
When you begin looking at the various opportunities that
are available out there, you should be asking yourself 3
important questions:
1) What is my passion in life?
If I had all the money in the world and could do
anything
I want, what would I be doing each day because I enjoy
it?
Over the years, what has kept your interest? What do you
keep coming back to?
Examine where your true interests lie and then you can
start to figure out how to turn that into a successful
business. This is usually where your true passions lie.
When you are passionate about your business, you will
not
only enjoy the work, but will work hard to make it a
success.
2) What Is My Personality?
The second question you need to ask yourself is
"what is
my personality like? The business you choose to start
will
need to reflect your personality. If you are an
introvert,
being in a business where you are forced to make cold
calls
all the time is definitely the wrong business for you.
What you really need to do is sit down and examine your
personality. Are you happy-go-lucky? Do you have a quick
temper? Are you a calm person, who doesn't get frazzled
by problems?
These are all aspects of your personality. Make a list
of
them. If you have trouble, ask your spouse, family and
friends. Just be prepared for what they will tell you,
some of it you may not like, especially if you don't see
yourself that way. Keep in mind though, they aren't
making
it up out of thin air...this may be a part of your
personality that you display to others and don't even
realize it. Take it into consideration.
3) What Is My Lifestyle?
The third question you should look at, is what is my
lifestyle like? Is it busy in my household? Am I always
on the go and rarely home and do I prefer it that way?
Do I like being home by myself, in a quiet atmosphere?
Do you travel often? Are you involved in your children's
activities and have to schedule around them?
Take the time to examine just how you live your life on
a
daily basis. Your business choice should be tailored to
how your household runs. Choosing a business where you
are out of the house everyday and you don't normally do
that could get tiring and stressful to you after a
while.
If you don't like frequent interruptions, choosing a
business
that deals in a lot of phone calls to clients would also
not
be a good choice. So, examine your lifestyle needs when
choosing business.
Those are the three questions you should concern
yourself
with. Your work should suit your passion, your
personality
and your lifestyle. Once you make a list of a few of
your
passions (people often have more than one), start looking
at
them in different aspects. How can I take this passion
in
this area and create a business that reflects my
personality
and coincides with my lifestyle? By doing this, you will
be
much happier in your work and your interest will sustain
you
through any bumps in the road.
