How
To Find The Best Money Making Idea
For You
by Diana
Pemberton-Sikes
If
you're like most people looking for extra ways to make
money, you've probably looked at and tried several
different things. Maybe you made some money, maybe
you
lost your shirt. Still, you keep searching hoping
that
one day, you'll find “the idea” that will
catapult you to
your dreams.
If this is you, here's a suggestion: Stop putting
the cart
before the horse.
In other words, find something you like to do and look
for
ways to make money doing it -- instead of looking at
ways
to make money and figuring out if you like it. It's
a
simple twist that will save you lots of time, money,
and
frustration.
Let me give you an example:
Two women I know joined Multi Level Marketing (MLM)
programs around the same time. One promoted security
systems, the other, gourmet kitchen gadgets.
Security
Systems was over and done with in about three
months;
Gourmet Kitchen Gadgets went on profitably for
several
years, until she decided to quit to spend more time
with
her kids.
Both were good products with lots of potential. Why did
one
succeed when the other did not?
Security Systems is a writer who would rather talk to the
characters she invents than a group of people she
doesn't
know. She agonized over the very thought of it. But
her
husband was gung-ho on the idea for her, so in an
effort
to please, she gave it a try. Gourmet Kitchen
Gadgets is a
good cook and a vivacious former marketing executive
who
thought nothing of meeting, greeting, cooking for
and
selling to complete strangers. She had an arsenal of
marketing tricks she used to build her business quickly
(including turning out tasty treats with her wares
for her
audience to sample), and she was profitable from day
one.
Her up-line cried and cried when she decided to throw in
the towel.
Don't allow yourself to be seduced by the sales pitch for
an idea that doesn't fit your personality and
interests.
It's a lesson I learned the hard way and want to
help you
to avoid, if possible.
Here's how you can put yourself on a speedy path to
success:
- Start with yourself. Take a good, long look at your
interests, talents, and skills. Be honest. What
do you
like to do? Cook? Eat chocolate? Wrestle
alligators?
Watch grass grow? Make a list.
- Decide
what you can or would be willing to do, all
things considered. Think of your personality, time
commitments, child care issues, transportation,
etc. Do
you like to talk to people? Hate the phone? Do
you want
to travel? Sit at home? Be the center of
attention?
Blend in with the wall? Write it all down.
- Determine how much money you want to make. A
little
*mad* money is going to require a different
commitment
than replacing your current income, as you
know. Include
this on your wish list.
- Finally, using your list, find or invent the
best
vehicle for you. If you want a tested model, look
for a
business opportunity that meets your criteria,
as in the
“Gourmet Kitchen Gadgets” example, above.
If you want to go it alone, start with a little
research.
See what other successful entrepreneurs are doing
in your
area of interest. Determine what you like,
dislike, can do
better, or do differently. Then go for it.
Finding the best money making idea for you isn't
difficult,
once you understand where to begin. Start with
yourself.
Put the horse BEFORE the cart, then point your
nose in the
direction of success.
"Most successful men have not achieved their
distinction by
having some new talent or opportunity presented to
them.
They have developed the opportunity that was at
hand."
-Bruce Marton
