Are
You Afraid Of Being
Too Successful?
by
Ron Knowlton
I know, this question
seems strange when you stop to think about it.
Fear of being too successful?
If anything, most online business people are afraid that
their advertising won't pull, that their products won't
sell, that they won't make a profit, that they'll
ultimately end up losing money.
All legitimate fears . . . maybe.
But fear itself and procrastination are two big stoppers.
They actually keep us back from accomplishing the goals
we've set out to achieve.
Throw the fears out the window and it's amazing what can
start to happen.
I learned this lesson after obtaining my teaching degree.
I went out to substitute teach. Call that a learning
experience!
Standing up in front of a group of sometimes unfriendly
teenagers - try to get their attention! Then try to get
them to do the work you have assigned . . . and you often
have your hands full!
When I would go in afraid, I would hold back. I would
hesitate. I was not sure of myself. And those feelings
strangely enough communicated themselves to my students.
And boy, did they sometimes take advantage.
Because there were times when I really didn't know what to
do. And I didn't know if the school administration would
support me if I picked up the phone to call about a
problem. I didn't know if the teacher next door would be
of help. I didn't know if I should just try to live
through whatever problems came up and just "survive
the day" or if I should try to reach out for help.
I've since discovered that the wise and prudent course to
take is to reach out and get some help.
And so it is in business. When you start out you don't
have all the answers.
There's a fear in the pit of your stomach that maybe
others will discover that you are a novice and they'll
avoid doing business with you from that time forward.
You're afraid of making mistakes that will cost you money.
So you hesitate. You pull back. You wait until you feel
more sure of yourself and then you go forward.
But your hesitancy and unwillingness to ask for help are
really holding you back and keeping you from the success
that you so strongly desire.
Set the fear aside. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Think
of the worst that could possibly happen. Could you live
with that? Would you be able to pick yourself up from the
dust and go on?
When you look at it that way, suddenly you realize that
the worst that could possibly happen is not the end of the
world and that it probably won't ever happen anyway.
Things will never be quite that bad, in all likelihood.
But, still, it's a major stopper if you let yourself dwell
on it.
Instead, loosen up. Lose the fear. Go forward. Take a deep
breath . . . relax!
And suddenly (like in teaching) when you lose the fear,
good things start to happen.
I actually found out that I could be a pretty good teacher
. . . working with obnoxious teenagers!
Sometimes, maybe I'm an obnoxious teenager at heart
myself!
Am I afraid of failure? Sure, to some extent. But I'm more
worried that I'll never succeed if my mind is so overcome
with fears of not being successful.
At some point I've come to realize that there are few
things in life that you can't do if you'll just take a
deep breath, relax, and go at it.
And when you do that . . . that's about the time that good
things start to happen!
